Lions Mane in helpful with:

Brain function

Longevity

Immunity

A BRIEF HISTORY

A bright white mushroom with strands of cascading hairs, Lion’s Mane is a favourite fungi for focus. From Asia to North America, Lion’s Mane has been harvested, extracted, and used as both a food and medicine for millennia. The Native north American tribes use to carry this mushroom in their medicine bags as a stypic (to stop bleeding). On the other side of the world, Lion’s Mane was referred to as Yamabushitake. Yamabushi mountain monks liked consuming the Lion’s Mane tea with meditation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it’s prescribed for digestive issues like ulcers and gastritis. In Scandanavia, the mushroom is used to support the immune system in cancer patients. And worldwide, it is also a culinary treat due to its incredible resemblance in taste and texture to crab and lobster meat.

HELPFUL FOR THE BRAIN

Known as the smart mushroom, Lion’s Mane has proven abilities to support our cognition and brain. In a study out of Nagano, Japan, 50- to 80-year-old men and woman with mild cognitive impairment either took 250mg of Lion’s Mane three times per day for 16 weeks or a placebo. The people taking Lion’s Mane had significant improved cognitive function versus the placebo group. They also had better cognitive function each week while consuming the mushroom. The two primary active brain compounds in Lion’s Mane are hericenones and erinacines. Herecenones can help our brain produce more of a protein called nerve growth factors (NGF) that is produced in our hippocampus and regenerates neurons in our brain. NGF was discovered in the 1950’s by two faculty members at Washington University in St Louis. They eventually won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in the late 1980s, but NGF is still a relatively new concept in the world of health. Lions Mane is one of the only natural foods that has been proven to help produce NGF. As such, it is often revered as one of the safest and best “smart drugs” also called nootropics, and it is natures best known tool for neuroplasticity - the brains ability to form and reorganise synaptic connections.

HELPFUL FOR LONGEVITY

Erinacines, the other main constituent in Lion’s Mane, have the rare ability to penetrate the blood-brain-barrier. Other things that can cross this barrier are alcohol, nicotine, heroine, and caffeine, making erinacines look like a real saint.

To protect itself the brain has a barrier that very few things can pass through. This impacts longevity because changes in the brain chemistry can begin up to 20 to 30 years before signs of dementia begin. Together with hericenones, erinacines help to support our brains longevity. Simply put, a decrease in NGF leads to brain cells dying faster, weaker memory, and declining neuroplasticity. All bad things for longevity. Lions Mane has a positive effect on nerves in other areas of the body as well.

HELPFUL FOR IMMUNITY

Lion’s Mane contains polysaccharides beneficial for our health. These complex (poly) sugars (saccharides) have two main benefits: they support gut health and are immunomodulatory. This means the act like “cruise control” for the immune system, ensuring it is neither too passive nor overactive. The most powerful and well-studied of these polysaccharides are beta-glucans, a common compound found in all top functional mushrooms. Lion’s Mane also has its own unique polysaccharides called HEP (Hericium erinaceus polysaccharide), which has been shown to help balance or modulate our immune response. Targeting the immune system via the gut, where about 70% of immune cells can be found, is common theme among functional mushrooms. Basically, strong gut health equals a strong immune system and vice versa.

The most common daily dose is 500 milligrams per day.
